Patching your Lawn
How to get rid of those spots the dog left behind
Dead patches of lawn are easy to fix. Here are the steps:
- Remove the dead or damaged section of lawn and an inch or two of the soil beneath it, and replace it with fresh, weed-free soil that is similar to the rest of the lawn, and seed (or a section of sod).
- Loosen the soil.
- Firm the new soil by tamping lightly, and then level it.
- Sprinkle seed over the prepared soil and lightly cover it with a thin layer of soil. Press the seed into the soil by gently pressing with your hands.
- Keep the seed bed moist until the seed germinates.
Most dead spots in lawns are caused by dog urine. But sometimes a dead spot is caused by spilled gasoline, fertilizer, or other chemical. If you suspect this is the case, remove and replace 9 to 10 inches of soil before replanting.
